Great South West Walk

Location: Lower Glenelg National Park

Arrival Time: 13:00 | Departure Time: 12:00

Established in 1981, the 252 kilometre Great South West Walk has been developed as a bushwalking trail suitable for most ages and abilities.

Fourteen campsites allowing one-night stays are located along the walk with walking sections of 10.6 - 26.3 kilometres between camps. It is recommended that the walk is undertaken anti-clockwise with the following sequence of camps: Cubbys, Cut Out, Cobboboonee, Fitzroy, Moleside, Battersbys, Pattersons, Simsons, Lake Monibeong, Swan Lake, Tarragal, The Springs, Trewalla and Mallee. The section of track from Swan Lake camp to Tarragal camp will be closed between 14 July 2017 and 1 September 2017 due to timber harvesting operations.

Details

The Great South West Walk winds around tall hardwood forests, pristine Glenelg River, picturesque township of Nelson, aboriginal cultural sites, the mighty Southern Ocean with vast sand dunes, sandy bays and beaches, rugged cliffs, freshwater lakes, Cape Nelson lighthouse, stunning Bridgewater Bay and amongst a diversity of natural fauna and flora.

As well as the full length walk, the track offers many opportunities for shorter walks by starting and finishing at locations accessible to vehicles.

Toilets are provided and tank water is available during the wetter months. Water must be treated before being used.

At each location there is only one shelter and table so these facilities must be shared between campers.

Campfires are permitted in the fireplaces provided at each location except Mallee Camp which is a FUEL STOVE ONLY location. No fires (including fuel stoves) are premitted on days of Total Fire Ban or high fire danger. Only one fireplace is provided at each location so it must be shared between campers. Minimum amounts of fallen, dry firewood can be collected but fuel stoves are preferred at all locations.

Bookings which open on 1 July each year are essential and will be based on a first-in, first-served basis.

Each location can accommodate 20 campers.

Only Mallee Camp has defined camping pads but campers at other locations must ensure they remain within the defined camping area.

The walk commences and finishes at the Portland Maritime Discovery and Visitor Information Centre in south-west Victoria.
