Buchan Caves - Cave Tours

Location: Buchan Caves Reserve

Hours: Tours are available everyday, except Christmas Day.

Visitors can camp, picnic, stay in Caves House and enjoy a Cave Tour.

COVID-19 safety procedures, conditions of entry into Caves

In line with current regulations we have implemented the following COVID-19 safe practices:
• All visitors 16+ are required to be fully vaccinated and provide Covid 19 digital certificate as proof of vaccination at entry of cave.
• If you feel unwell, please stay home and get tested.
• Face masks must be worn, unless you have a lawful reason not to. Children 12 years and under are not required to wear a mask.
• Hand sanitation stations are located at the entry and exit of each cave tour and must be used as a requirement of entry.
• Regular sanitising of all handrails is carried out every day in line with current guidelines.
• People with lawful reasons for not wearing a face mask should still keep at least 1.5 metres apart from others, practice regular hand hygiene by washing or sanitising hands frequently and get tested if unwell.
• Visitors/patrons should be aware that their tour group may include people who have a lawful reason to not wear a mask.

All Cave Tour tickets must be purchased online prior to arrival. Online purchases close at midnight for the following day.

Tours are released 4-6 weeks prior to each school holiday period.



Single cave tour times

Royal Cave:
- Start of September school holidays until 31 May: 10.00am, 11.15am, 12.45pm, 2.00pm, 3.15pm Monday-Friday with additional tours on Saturday/Sunday 10.30am, 11.45am, 1.15pm, and 2.30pm
- 1 June to the start of September school holidays: 11.00am and 2.00pm

Fairy Cave:
- Start of September school holidays until 31 May: Currently closed
- 1 June to the start of September school holidays: 12.45pm

Double cave tour times

No double cave tours due to Fairy Cave being closed

Guided Above Ground Tours are currently closed

How much time does it take to get to Buchan Caves?
Travel time varies, depending on where you start, and also on delays and stops that you might make along the way. Generally, if you take the fastest route, and do not stop or experience delays it takes approximately 4.5hrs from Melbourne
- 45 mins from Lakes Entrance
- 55 mins from Bairnsdale
- The recommended GPS address: Buchan

How long does a cave tour take?
Each cave take 45min to 1hr for a cave tour, and you can only see the caves with a guide.

Can I take a baby pram or stroller in the caves?
No. You cannot take a pram or stroller through any of the caves at Buchan. Also, there are no backpack allowed, but a baby wrap carried on the front is okay.

Can I take photos in the cave?
Yes. Photography is permitted on all tours. Tripods, monopods and selfie sticks are not allowed on tours, and may not be brought into any cave.

What is the best cave to see?
One cave is not better than the other, as they are both different. It is like asking what is the best food on a menu. It is a subjective choice. The main difference that can be explained is Royal Cave is the easier out of the two caves, Fairy cave requires a lot more bending down and has approx. 100 more stairs than the Royal Cave.
If you have doubts about your capabilities please let your guide know before entering the cave.

What is the temperature in the caves?
The caves are a constant temperature of 17° degrees with approx. 99% humidity.

What time is the 11am tour?
The 11am tour commences at 11am, guides are required to leave on time to ensure they provide a 45min to 1 hr tour and are out in time for their next tour.

Do we need torches?
The caves are fully lit by 12 volt led lights, with some sections having additional feature lights. Track lights all the way through.

Am I allowed to eat, drink or smoke in the cave?
There is NO eating, drinking or smoking allowed in the caves.
